Day 21 : christmas tree game

OK so, this game is best played in the car (although you could tweak it
to suit your mode of transport). You need at least 2 players. Divide
yourself into teams- driver's side vs passenger's side. The aim of the
game is to see (and count out loud) as many Christmas trees as possible
on the way to your destination. IMPORTANT, you can ONLY count
the trees that you pass on your side, trees MUST be decorated, the
tree can be inside or outside, as long as it is decorated. This game is
often harder for the driver as they have to kept their eyes on the road -
so the route you take to your destination is entirely up to 'drive'- this may or may not advantage your driver and incur some elements of what may seem like cheating, this is, to be honest, pretty much in line with the tone of the game! GOOD LUCK- let me know your best scores/ routes/ tactics!
WARNING: you can sometimes be drawn into 'the amazingly decorated house, with lights/father Christmas hanging out of a window etc/ trap' assuming it'll be a score, but if it doesn't have a decorated tree it doesn't count !

Day 15 : home-made ginger biscuits

HOMEMADE GINGER BISCUITS
125g unsalted butter
90g brown sugar
3 tbsp molasses / treacle
1 egg, beaten
370g plain flour, sifted
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp ground ginger
1 tsbp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp ground mixed spice

Mix it all up together- I’m sure you should be really careful or something- but I'm not, bung it together, then wrap it in cling film, and put in the fridge for at least half an hour - this will help make it manageable.

Then when its ready, pre heat oven to 180 degrees and roll out mixture and cut in to shapes, put in the oven for 10 -15 mins - keep checking, they should be a bit squidgy.

And hey presto biscuits for you to eat/ or give as presents- hurrah

Twinkly fairy lights are definitely a symbol of this festive time and a fast track to make you feel just a little bit more christmassy. Whether they are white or multi-coloured the innocent glow of a string of fairy lights is a very brilliant thing!

A real fire really does have a hypnotic quality to it...if you can get yourself somewhere that has one, and soak it in, let your worries float away and enjoy the warmth & calm the fire can provide.
The smell of it too will help add to the festive vibes.

For me at the moment its got to be HOT ribeana- mmmmm bliss, slightly medicinal, slightly like sweets & full of blackcurranty goodness! Obviously please go for tea/ coffee/ toddy what ever you fancy, just enjoy a moment of clutching the mug in a ever-so-slightly 1980s advert kind of way!

Day 6 : When it's dark outside & houses are all lit up

I love this! I know it can make you feel a bit down, cause its dark before you've even finished work, but its ok, this is one of those weird and special things about this season...just go with it!
It does mean that when you pass everyones lit up homes, you can be super nosey and look in and get a glimpse into someone elses world!

When I was little I used to see house lit up in the distance and think it was Bethlehem! Ah bless!

Day 3 : Dogs in jumpers!
This obviously is becoming more of a 'usual' sighting, but this time of year does seem to bring a few more out, particularly the specifically 'christmas themed canine outfits' - surely this is a bit of FREE festive entertainment for us all to enjoy! Hurrah!

Happy Advent! Can you believe its the first of December already? Can you believe it was snowing this time last year?...I remember this because I made a picture about it to celebrate day 1 of my 'little things of christmas advent calendar'!
I'm afraid this years calendar is going to be a reworked version of last year (with a baby due in 3 weeks, I have quite a lot going on!) so think of this years calendar as being last years pulled out of the christmas box, it has all of its doors neatly shut again, ready for you to guess, anticipate & open them - but in a slightly different order!

Anyway, the idea of 'the little things of christmas' is just that! Looking out for and enjoying all those tiny moments, touches and combinations that get us in the festive mood!...so here's day 1 - enjoy!

Day 1: Lots of Layers
I love wearing wintery woollens.
It makes me feel cosy & a little bit invincible (which is always nice!) Embrace this time of year & wear lots of layers!

No.1 Harbourside - 8 months of design...

8 months ago, the very amazing Lizzie asked me to work with her on some new branding and design for a bar in Bristol. After much coffee drinking, talking & tweaking...we now have 8 editions of the monthly listings flyer, a tea menu, a wine menu, various adverts, business cards and a website under our belts...and it makes me very happy!
Have a lovely cuppa at No.1 on the harbourside in the winter sun in the morning, or have some lovely local beverages with FREE music of an evening...

More artwork for the Maternity ward at Southmead Hospital

This is a new piece of artwork I have just completed, commissioned by the North Bristol NHS Trust.

It is to promote the new 'Precious Drops Milk Bank' that is opening at Southmead Hospital on tuesday. Women are able to donate breast milk, which gets pasturised and stored here at the milk bank, and passed on to those who need it, especially the neo-natal ward next door.

I have just spent the morning with the lovely Staff at the maternity ward and the Fantastic 'Chocolate Exhibitions' installing the panel.

I'm really pleased with it, and feel like it definately does its job of brightening up the corridor as well as celebrating the new venture. Let's just hope its a real success!

I love posters. I think they may be one of my favourite commissions. There is just something about them. I've been lucky enough to do quite a few recently.

One is a re-worked version for Red Table Theatre's production 'Just so stories' for their Edinburgh run. Then next is for Purple Goat Theatre who are producing a epic production of 'Pinocchio' in Southend, performing with professionals, adults with learning difficulties and primary school kids. Funnily its my second Pinocchio poster, as I did stuff for the Roundhouse for there christmas show last year. It's quite a fun excerise to revisit a brief with a new client. Finally I have produced a trio of posters for Kilter Theatre who are embarking on a 3 year project based in Bath. Its called 'The Green Roofs' it will work with the residents of a pretty rundown estate, Snow Hill, whilst also using expertise from photographers, historians, story tellers, to inspire, devise and develop some kind of performance about the people and place to be performed in 2013.

Dreaming of home: NEW WORK FOR SALE!

Dreaming of home is the theme for Greenbelt festival this year, and I was asked to make some illustrations based on this idea to be included in the brochure as well as to be turned into t-shirt designs.
They are a series of images about collections of categorised objects that could represent home. I have got rather taken by the idea, and have made them into a limited edition of digital prints for sale.
So each of these is my usual A4 format and cost just £10 each.
I am exhibiting them in the South Bank arts trail this weekend, so if you are in Bristol pop into to no.40 (mount pleasant terrace) and take a look.

Umwangavu: Every girl Shapes her future

I was asked by a friend who works for an ad agency Wieden + Kennedy to produce some test illustrations for a project they are doing for Nike. It's part of a charity project and is about investing and inspiring young Rwandan girls - giving them opportunities, education and choices, one way they are trying to do this is through a magazine aimed at teenaged girls, called 'Umwangavu, every girl shapes her future'.
The first thing I was asked to do was to make a simple illustration to indicate changes in puberty. The idea is that these pages will be printed onto a slightly translucent paper, so when you hold it to the light you can see them with no clothes on!

If nothing else I have learnt a good bit of random Rwandan, that I'm sure will come in handy some time!
I have just had an email from my friend from the agency who is off to Rwanda today, and apparently they have already had a bit of feedback that, in fact the images may be too full on and even be deemed against the law- so we will see!
The other things I have done, I hope will be less controversial!

These flying birds are initial ideas for icons to be used through the magazine. The designers at W+K will probably change them quite a lot but they were looking for some images to help them capture a feel of colour, energy and well something slightly naive in style...I let you see where they take it when and if the project goes any further!...

I was asked recently to design a new look listing flyer for the gorgeous little Bar No.1 Harbourside (on the waterfront in Bristol), using their existing vintage styling, explain & promote it as a food & drinking place, as well as home of the ferry station, hub for the new Harbourside market and venue for LIVE music as well as promoting their delicious soup- which comes free, just go in and get some- v yummy!

Southmead Maternity Ward Artwork

This is the artwork I have just completed for the maternity Ward in Southmead Hospital. It was commissioned by the North Bristol NHS Trust.
It is a donor wall, the idea being that families, parents or sponsors pay £25/ £50/ £100 to buy a little hot air ballon plaque, with the name of the new baby on it. It's to celebrate the ever growing 'Southmead family' as well as raise funds for the department.
I'm really pleased with the result, so far. I had a mega quick turnaround on it, due to production deadlines, but it's going to be installed on friday, with a BIG launch of the 10th March. I look forward to taking some photos and seeing it in real life!

The artwork is made in 2 panels. See Below. The actual size of the whole piece will be 5.5m wide by 1m high.

Sausage & bean casserole. This might seem a little unfestive, but actually there is sooooo much full on food to be had you need to pace yourself. Having a throw-it-all-in-one-pot-kind-of-casserole will make you feel a bit wholesome- because actually its all rather good and tasty, smug- because there's not very much washing up, and generally set up for the next few days of tidying/shopping/decorating/panicking!

It happens everywhere- not just in sandwiches but on menus too, its a bit of a sweeping food generalisation- like butternut squash risotto for vegetarians - but if that's all it takes to make us feel christmasy, then bring it on!

You feel even more cosy and smug when it's particular freezing and frosty outside, knowing that what you are doing is not only blissful but sensible!

Ahhhhhhhh - the wonder that is the selection box. The time it takes to choose your chocolate... even if, when the tin gets to you, you have a good idea of which chocolate you would like, it is still very important to take a little bit too long looking at the little card, reading the choccy info, just incase it's going to swing your decision. Oh and it's probably worth taking 2 chocolates whilst the tin is in front of you. Or 3!

Happy advent!
I thought I'd set myself the challenge of creating my own advent calendar. So here we go. For the next 25 days I'll post up a christmasy/ wintery/ festive image. It'll be a kind of 'the little things of christmas' I thought I'd start with SNOW as it seems to be a feature of many of our lives at the moment- and I might not get the chance again! So if you have any ideas or requests for images let me know.

5 dogs is a print I have just made, as a memento gift for some lovely chums who are about to move away- boo...5 dogs belong to one man who walks them twice a day in the little park in st werburghs. 5 dogs are sooooo fast you sometimes think its only one dog running round and round you! Anyway a silly picture to brighten this slightly gloomy world.

Pinocchio for the Roundhouse Theatre

I have just finished this poster artwork for the Round House Theatre in London. Pinocchio is their family show this christmas. It's a one-hander puppet show I believe. See link below. At-Bristol picnic tables

At-Bristol have recently created a great picnic space for school groups or families to go and hang out and eat in. The only problem was it was a little on the drab side - so I got asked to brighten it up! Hurrah! The space has a series of large bench tables, so the above images are scratch-proof vinyls that are being put onto to each table. The idea being you will feel like you are picnic-ing outdoors!...and you can even eat your sandwich off a plate that is drawn on the table!..if you know what I mean?!

Below are a some giant sunflowers which will go on a massive concrete wall to help set thetone.

your family your voice

This is a lovely project I am working on for Bristol University. They are carrying out some national research into kinship care - interviewing young people between the ages of 8-18, who for whatever reason, are not looked after by their parents but by a member of their family instead. Above is my logo for the project.

With many design processes it can be a long journey to get to the final point, for this the struggle has been establishing what the clients want and then translating this into images that appeal to our target age group but also communicate to the academic & research community. Despite the ups and downs, trying to get it right, I have to say that I am really pleased with the result and now we have this sorted I look forward to the rest of the project beginning to take shape.

The interviews with the young people will take the form of an activity book, which i am designing and illustrating. This is the cover for it. This is just the start of the project and the content is yet to devised and written - so watch this space...

HANNAH MAKES A SPLASH WITH HUGE HARBOURSIDE ARTWORK

Co-commissioned by At-Bristol, Bristol City Council & Destination Bristol, Hannah was asked to produce artwork that not only celebrated Bristol's harbourside but also covered up a large unsightly wooden hoarding stretching 73metres!

The banners run along the edge of millennium square to the waterfront next to Bordeaux Quay.

Harbourside Banners

Here are some mini images for what is actually a bit of WHOPPING WORK!

These 4 banners will be hung next to each other to cover some, currently quite grotty, hoardings in the Harbourside in Bristol. They will be printed onto vinyl banners and will be nearly 2 and half metres high and run to almost 73 metres in length, spanning an area between Millennium Square and the Harbourfront next to Bordeaux Quay. It is in production at the moment and is due to go up in time for the harbourside festival at the end of the month. Hurrah!

The banners in the flesh...kind of!

The exhibition is up and on the road. It's currently at St Werburghs City Farm, but I think it's on tour again tomorrow! I have to say that when I visited the exhibition I was completely overwhelmed! I have to say I am thrilled with how the banners have come out- but the whole thing is amazing. There is a shed you can sit in, pick beans, read tips, listen to stories...it's just totally wonderful, quite moving and really inspiring. Plase see the flyer below for the exhibiton tour dates.

It's been a joyeous project to work on and I can't wait to see them printed up and in there glory at the exhibition over the summer.

This is a project I did a poster for a while ago to recruit volunteers to help with this audio-visual exhibition about the history of urban gardening- well here is the poster and flyer for the exhibition itself. I am still working on the exhibition panels, but Tinker& Bloom are currently working of editing all of the recorded stories which will form a major part of this travelling exhibition.

I seem to being doing quite alot of space related work for chidlers at the mo! So if you need to know anything about the solar system, stars or the sun, you know where to come!

This is an education pack I have just done the illustration and design work for.

You have to imagine it in its proper format- its a folder A3 sheet- so its A5 at its littlest and then it opens up to the A3 activity poster bit. Felix wrote it and its to accompany Tall Stories' new show by the same name! (on Tour now)
