Little Baby Jesus. We've made it the count down through advent is done and it's finally Christmas. Happy Birthday Jesus & Happy Blummin' Christmas!

Old socks as stockings. So it really is time to get excited and get all of those carrot, sherry, mince pie traditions in gear. The stocking ceremony is about as exciting as it gets. If you've been good you might be running around the house on Christmas morning shouting "he's been, he's been!"...only if you were really good...ha ha!

Christmas Jumpers...need I say more? I have a particular person in mind whilst drawing this, who displays a festival of jumpers at this festive time - I thank you! Also I think I have become a bit clothing/ knitwear obsessed in this series because I am soooooo chilly! To christmas jumpers you ROCK!

Sausage & bean casserole. This might seem a little unfestive, but actually there is sooooo much full on food to be had you need to pace yourself. Having a throw-it-all-in-one-pot-kind-of-casserole will make you feel a bit wholesome- because actually its all rather good and tasty, smug- because there's not very much washing up, and generally set up for the next few days of tidying/shopping/decorating/panicking!

Apologises to anyone that thinks this sort of telly is R-U-B-B-I-S-H...but you are wrong! A programme that can make you smile, laugh and weep is alright isn't it? Anyway, sequins, sparkle and a bit of camp never hurt anyone- embrace it!

Candles. All advent calendars need a picture of this. Whether you consider them spiritually symbolic in the celebration of light or simply a good bit of mood lighting- you can't beat some candles flickering away to make you feel festive.

OK so, this game is best played in the car (although you could tweak it to suit your mode of transport). You need at least 2 players. Divide yourself into teams- driver's side vs passenger's side. The aim of the game is to see (and count out loud) as many Christmas trees as possible on the way to your destination. IMPORTANT, you can ONLY count the trees that you pass on your side, trees MUST be decorated, the trees can be inside or outside, as long as it is decorated. This game is often harder for the driver as they have to kept their eyes on the road (apparently!!) so the route you take to your destination is entirely up to 'drive'- this may or may not advantage your driver and incur some elements of what may seem like cheating, this is, to be honest, pretty much in line with the tone of the game! GOOD LUCK- let me know your best scores/ routes/ tactics!
WARNING: you can sometimes be drawn into 'the amazingly decorated house, with lights/father Christmas hanging out of a window etc/ trap' assuming it'll be a score, but if it doesn't have a decorated tree it doesn't count !

mmmmmm homemade ginger biscuits - not only do they taste good, more importantly they make the whole house smell AMAZING!
Below is the recipe I use:
125g unsalted butter
90g brown sugar
3 tbsp molasses / treacle
1 egg, beaten
370g plain flour, sifted
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp ground ginger
1 tsbp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp ground mixed spice
Mix it all up together- I sure you should be really careful or something- but I'm not bung it together, then wrap it in cling film, and put in the fridge for at least half an hour - this will help make it manageable.
Then when its ready, pre heat oven to 180 degrees and roll out mixture and cut in to shapes, put in the oven for 10-15 mins- keep checking, they should be a bit squidgy.
And hey presto biscuits for you to eat/ or give as presents- hurrah!

Nothing quite signifies christmas like the colours red and green together. We seem to be wired to just think christmas when we see the colours together...its like old school XMAS Branding!

The utter relief you have when you first of all manage to get the string untangled, you then secondly, tentitively plug them in, and, wait for it , THEY WORK!...christmas starts here!

little things of christmas Advent Calendar : day 10 "the addition of cranberries to pre-packed sandwiches to make them festive"!
It happens everywhere- not just in sandwiches but on menus too, its a bit of a sweeping food generalisation- like butternut squash risotto for vegetarians - but if that's all it takes to make us feel christmasy, then bring it on!

little things of christmas Advent Calendar : day 9 "keeping you hands warm around a lovely cup of something hot"!
It is indeed, a very simple pleasure, but that savoured enjoyment of having your hands wrapped around a hot drink, clutching at all the heat it can give out - BLISS!

anything to keep warm!...and cause its just lovely. You can be listening to music, watching the telly, chatting through the little things in life, it's all made so much better when you're snuggled up! You feel even more cosy and smug when it's particular freezing and frosty outside, knowing that what you are doing is not only blissful but sensible!

Ahhhhhhhh - the wonder that is the selection box. The time it takes to choose your chocolate... even if, when the tin gets to you, you have a good idea of which chocolate you would like, it is still very important to take a little bit too long looking at the little card, reading the choccy info, just incase it's going to swing your decision. Oh and it's probably worth taking 2 chocolates whilst the tin is in front of you. Or 3!

the lovely anticipation that you get when you can just tell who the post is from, by the handwriting, or the postmark, and then sitting down with a lovely cup of coffee to read exciting news from the friends you don't see everyday.

"When it's dark outside & houses are all lit up & you get a little sneaky peak into other peoples lives"
Come on - we're all nosey by nature!

I thought I'd set myself the challenge of creating my own advent calendar. So here we go. For the next 25 days I'll post up a christmasy/ wintery/ festive image. It'll be a kind of 'the little things of christmas' I thought I'd start with SNOW as it seems to be a feature of many of our lives at the moment- and I might not get the chance again! So if you have any ideas or requests for images let me know.
All images will be available to buy as prints or cards.
